Summer Coolers -
Celebrating National Iced Tea Month in June
was a scorching hot summer day at the 1904 World’s Fair in
St. Louis and festival attendees were uninterested in the hot tea
that Richard Blechynden was serving. Attempting to salvage the day,
he poured his brewed tea over ice, and the quintessential English
tradition of “taking tea” was forever changed. Crediting
the “invention” of iced tea to Richard Blechynden is
the subject of great debate, but all might agree that his efforts
helped to popularize this most refreshing and delicious elixir.
cool, refreshing, good for you, and so popular that an entire month
has been set aside to celebrate…Summer is here and so is National
Iced Tea Month. “June’s National Iced Tea Month is a
good time to drink up the many benefits of tea," says Joe Simrany,
President of the Tea Council of the USA. “It’s tasty,
refreshing, has zero calories and is chock full of health benefits,
so it’s a terrific beverage choice. With a multitude of research
suggesting that the substances in tea may help the body maintain
healthy cells and tissues, contribute to heart health and keep your
weight in check, why would anyone choose to drink anything else?”
According to the Tea Association of the USA, over the last ten years, Ready-To-Drink (RTD) Tea has grown by more than 15 times. In 2010, Ready-To-Drink sales were conservatively estimated at $3.30 billion. And approximately 85% of tea consumed in America is iced.

Best New Product Award: ‘Steep & Go’
Cold Brew Tea Infuse
The Tea Spot has been awarded Best New Product in the Innovation Category from the World Tea Expo for their latest addition to the Steepware® line. The Steep & Go cold brew tea infuser is the winner of this year’s product award. Steep & Go was designed for the health conscious person on-the-go. This reverse infuser pairs with disposable water bottles and loose leaf teas to make fresh cold-brewed tea within just 10 minutes. The World Tea Expo is the largest Business-to-Business (B2B) event for the tea industry, attracting more than 4,500 attendees. This year's conference and trade show will take place June 1 – 3, 2012, at the Las Vegas, Nevada Convention Center.
Steep & Go was developed to provide health conscious consumers a fresh-brewed bottled tea alternative, free from sweeteners and preservatives. Ready-to-drink teas are a rapidly growing sector of the US tea market, while a growing number of consumers are looking to reduce their intake of sweet carbonated beverages. All shelf-stable bottled teas contain some form of preservative and most contain a substantial amount of sweetener; additionally, some bottled teas only contain trace amounts of actual tea. Steep & Go shifts the current paradigm, allowing people to make real, fresh brewed tea with fresh water in a water bottle. Initially developed under the name “Slim Steeper”, the Steep & Go bottle brewer is the first in a series of products The Tea Spot is designing specifically for cold brewed loose leaf tea. The company’s goal is to source loose leaf teas that infuse rapidly with reusable and disposable water bottles and tea infusers. This set of products will offer an on-the-go tea option free of preservatives, and packed with freshly infused antioxidants and vitamins.
The Tea Spot’s CEO, Maria Uspenski, stated: “Steep & Go is a convenient way to make fresh tea in a water bottle. We find that our customers want a healthy and great tasting beverage, but also appreciate our making it easy for them to make a perfect serving of tea - hot or cold. At The Tea Spot, we strive to make every new Steepware® product fit that requirement of making loose leaf tea more accessible. We’re looking forward to launching the Steep & Go at the upcoming World Tea Expo, and are extremely honored to be receiving the prestigious Best New Product award at the Expo for the second time.”
The Steep & Go cold brew tea infuser has a hands-free sports cap and will be available in four different colors: Green Tea, Blueberry, Violet, and Tangerine. It will be available for wholesale purchase at the 2012 World Tea Expo, and will also be available for retail purchase at their online tea shop, TheTeaSpot.com, later in June 2012 for $6.99.
