Show Charity:
freeplay foundationThe Lifeline radio can change the world--one person, one house, one village at a time."
--Tom Hanks, Actor and U.S. Ambassador of the Freeplay Foundation

As reported at the freeplayfoundation.org., the 1994 genocide almost destroyed Rwanda's coffee industry. Today, half a million Rwandan farmers are making great strides in revitalising their coffee crops for the global specialty coffee market. However, middlemen called "coyotes" hamper the farmers' efforts by withholding vital industry information.

Coffee Lifeline provides market transparency by enabling coffee farmers to hear the correct price of coffee beans, new farming techniques and weather bulletins. Coffee Lifeline empowers producers by giving them sustained access to information that can directly affect their ability to improve their own lives.

The long term goal of Coffee Lifeline is to utilize lifeline radios to connect coffee farmers in Africa, Indonesia, South and Central America through weekly broadcasts of a globally transmitted “World Café” program that will offer coffee related technical information, education, health advice, and oral storytelling traditions. coffee creations karen elandFor self-taught artist Karen Eland, coffee is so much more than a steamy beverage that delivers her morning buzz, it is a way to express her creative imagination—she paints with it.

Coffee art is a truly unique art form. It requires a thoughtful and delicate touch. Eland uses a slow and sophisticated process of building layers upon layers of espresso to capture the depth of the classic works she showcases. Putting a modern and caffeinated spin on classic paintings by famous painters like Vermeer, DaVinci, Michelangelo, and Picasso, you’ll enjoy each of Eland’s interpretations--the most popular being Mona Latte.

Whether you select greeting cards, prints, or originals, Eland’s creations make a perfect gift for any coffee lover or any coffee shop’s décor. (www.coffee-art.com)

*Karen Eland, coffee artist, will do live espresso painting on both days of the event.

dogfish head breweryThe story of Dogfish Head began in June of 1995 when Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, the first state's first brewpub, opened in the resort beach community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The plan was to bring original beer, original food, and original music to the area. Not only was Dogfish Head Delaware's first brewpub, it was the smallest commercial brewery in America. Their very first batch, Shelter Pale Ale, was brewed on a system that was essentially three little kegs with propane burners underneath. Brewing 12-gallon batches of beer for a whole restaurant proved to be more than a full time job. When the doors to the pub first opened, beer was brewed three times a day, five days a week! The one benefit to brewing on such a small system was the ability to try out a myriad of different recipes. They quickly got bored brewing the same things over and over–that´s when they started adding all sorts of weird ingredients and getting kind of crazy with the beers! Dogfish Head continues to grow today. It offers 18 styles of beer that are sold in more than 20 states, and several hand–crafted spirits.

Dogfish Head will be presenting their Chicory Stout at the Coffee & Tea Festival. This delicious dark beer is made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. Brewed with whole-leaf Cascade and Fuggles hops, the grains include pale, roasted & oatmeal. (www.dogfish.com)

original t bag designsThe artists from Original T-Bag Designs live in an informal settlement located in Mandela Park, outside of Cape Town in South Africa. Their homes are bits of tin and wood nailed together and they have had no formal schooling. But what they do have is grit and imagination and a desire to make their families' lives better. The artists use recycled tea bags as their canvases--and are painting themselves out of poverty.

Used tea bags are collected and dried in the African sun. Then they are emptied of leaves and carefully ironed. Finally, each tea bag is painstakingly painted. They work mostly at home during these early phases so they can care for their families while they work. The group gathers together to assemble the finished products: greeting cards, notepads, journals, ornaments, candles, coasters, trinket boxes, and tea light holders. They'll make special designs by request, but ordinarily they just paint "what is in our heads". (www.originaltbagdesigns.com)

Karen Eland, coffee artist
For self-taught artist Karen Eland, coffee is so much more than a steamy beverage that delivers her morning buzz, it is a way to express her creative imagination—she paints with it.

karen elandWe drink coffee, use it in recipes, and can even marinate a steak with it. But, paint with it? You’ve go to see it to believe it.
